i see this phrase a lot: "the indication of a cult is what happens when you leave.
" i'm not sure where that originated, but it is a faulty categorization.
"cult" is almost always used in a derogatory way.
As someone who was a member for 50 years and a long time elder, there is no doubt in my mind its a cult, its not just that you cannot leave ,, you cannot believe anything else. Who tells you what to believe, who speaks for God , the leaders. We may not worship them , but to disagree with them openly is 'death' .

Hey James, super enjoyed the video. As a former elder and cobe, I could really relate . I was struck by your reasons for waking up. They were almost identical to mine. The org bringing you the end of the world predictions and getting it wrong for 130 years. The anti education stance, what are you trying to hide? Also your take on many elders, so many totally defined by the fact they are an elder. Uneducated cleaner, then by virtue of being an elder is a prince and has power over people's lives. Makes them feel important, special. This is what will slow down the demise of the org, elders will fight tooth and nail not to loose there special status. active believer...still attend meetings, go out in field service, believe it's ''the truth''.
active non-believer... go to meetings and field service to please family... living a double life .
inactive believer...don't attend meetings but believe it's the truth, one day might go back to kingdom hall.

i'm not ex-jw but i am ex-mormon and as your cousin i can sympathize with the struggles we face when we question/leave the religion.. i currently have a survey open which closes on sunday the 20th at 11pm.. if you meet the criteria i encourage you to take the 20-30 minute survey.
-be at least 18 years old-born/raised jw (born in or family converted when you were minor)-"left" at least 6 months ago (left=inactive and questioning/non-believing).

we sent this letter to all the elders after they decided that we deserved to die for asking questions that they either could not answer, despite their declared extensive knowledge of the scriptures, or else were too embarrassed to admit the answers.
needless to say we never received a reply or heard from them again.

One more thing. As a ex-longtime elder. When you speak to one elder in confidence imagine you are speaking to the whole elder body, some of his elder buddies in other congregations and half the wives of the elders. That is the truth of JW elder confidences.
